Imagine for a moment that your company signed up for a Yellow Pages ad but for some reason or another, your ad was left out of this year's directory. It happens all the time and has for decades - some advertisers get left out accidently and sometimes their businesses suffer as a result. Same thing can happen to your newspaper ad for your big once a year sale. Does the Yellow Pages have the same control over offline search that Google does for online search?

On the other hand, you may be right about the manual intervention of SERPS. After all, who has a patent on manually edited search engine results? Without its algorithm is GOOG just a brand that sells ads? Or is it something more?
